I have done this on my Ubuntu 10.04 and it works, Just follow the simple steps:

  1. Install the extended preference plugin

    sudo aptitude install pidgin-extprefs
  2. In your Pidgin click on Tools > Plugins check the “Extended Preferences 0.7″ > Configure Plugin > check “Hide buddy list at startup” and close.
  3. In Plugins check the “Buddy List Options” > Configure Plugin > check “Hide the buddy list when it is created” then close.
  4. System > Preferences > Startup Applications > Add.

Name: Pidgin Internet Messenger or "any thing you want to type".
    Command: pidgin
Comment: "anything you like to type again."
    then you save and close.
  5. Enjoy and have fun with your Ubuntu.

I’m running Ubuntu 10.10 and before that 10.04. The script doesn’t work. My script waits for 60 seconds before starting Pidgin and, even though I’ve installed the extended preferences 0.7 and selected “Hide buddy list on startup”, it just doesn’t matter. Even if I disable Pidgin on startup and run it manually the ^%$^##^ Buddy List still appears. This is really annoying.

i don’t know what really happen in your set-up but this one works on my 10.04 perfectly, the buddy list won’t show up.

You have to exit pidgin at least ONCE and then shut down the computer.  The reason for this is that the Ubuntu shutdown kills pidgin on shutdown and restart and pidgin never gets to do a clean exit.  The next time you start, it should work.

I’m using Ubuntu 12.10. I installed this with the command sudo apt-get install pidgin-extprefsinstead of aptitude because it doesn’t work.
Anyway, it is minimized on startup, but I can’t open the window, i think it is forced to be minimized. I had to uninstall it. I’m still looking for a solution which works.

In Preferences, try setting “System Tray Icon” to “Always”.
